Known bugs & limitations

We develop PPTools under Windows PowerPoint versions 97 and onward including any available versions in beta test.

Tens of thousands of people have downloaded and installed PPTools - only a handful of them have reported problems. Usually, we've been able to fix those within days, if not sooner.

If you have a problem with any of the PPTools, please check the list of known problems below and also the section about the particular tool. If the problem is known and there's a fix or workaround, it'll be there. Also check the updates page for each PPTool to see if there's a newer version that solves the problem.

If that doesn't help, follow the instructions here:

Troubleshooting PPTools

Known Problems
(For problems/workarounds specific to particular PPTools, see the PPTools In More Detail entry for that tool)

Problem
When I click some of the PPTools buttons, my computer makes a sound, but nothing else happens. Or when I click some of the PPTools buttons, I get a message box explaining some minor problem or other, like I'm in the wrong view to use this tool. This constant nattering is annoying. Can't you get rid of some of these message boxes?
Solution
When you start using PPTools, you may need a little extra help. Once you get the idea, you won't need the hand-holding, so PPTools has a feature called Expert Mode.

If Expert Mode is off, you'll see lots of explanatory messages. Expert Mode is off by default.

Once you know your way around, turn Expert Mode on and you'll only see messages that we consider essential. Informational messages won't appear. Instead, the computer beeps once, and you can get on with your work.

You can turn Expert Mode on and off from the Master toolbar Preferences dialog box. Click Preferences and put a checkmark next to Expert Mode.

So many tools, so little screen real estate! Can't I customize what tools appear and on which toolbar?

Absolutely. See "Creating your own toolbar" below.

You can also move the toolbars wherever you want them, and dock them just as you would any of PowerPoint's other toolbars. They'll stay where you put them from one session to the next.

Creating your own toolbar

If you use some of the RnR PPTools but don't want the entire collection in your face all of the time, here's how to take control.

  1. Create a new toolbar
  2. Choose View, Toolbars, Customize from the menu bar to see the Customize dialog box. Click the Toolbars tab. Click New, give your new toolbar a name, then click OK. Your new toolbar appears with no buttons on it. Don't close the Customize dialog yet.
  3. Add buttons to your new toolbar
  4. With the Customize dialog still open, drag any button you like to your new toolbar. These can be PowerPoint's buttons or buttons from any of the RnR PPTools toolbars. Close the Customize dialog box.
  5. Make the PPTools toolbars disappear
  6. Click the Preferences button on the Master toolbar and click the name of any toolbar to highlight it. Then remove the checkmark next to Visible to make it disappear.

Note: Please use the Master toolbar Preferences dialog rather than View, Toolbars or the Customize dialog to make PPTools visible or invisible.
